Steaks and BBQ that students can
afford
Chad Wayne / News Editor
A large blade swings and the pork, chicken and beef fall apart into neat cuts. Eugene is behind the counter, taking orders and chopping meat into perfect portions and wrapping the orders in wax paper. Meanwhile, Brandon Proctor is in the back cooking.
Brandon is the manager and cook at Burt’s Butcher Shop. He’s been working for Burt Stacey, the owner, since Burt first opened his business on Macon road.
That was about fourteen years ago. Now Burt’s Butcher Shop is located on the corner of Warm Springs Road and East Lindsay Drive – next to Peachtree Package.
The name Burt’s Butcher Shop is deceptive. It’s not just a butcher shop but a restaurant as well. Originally Burt’s Butcher Shop just sold meat at their Macon Road location near Dairy Queen. But employees from the strip mall would come in, wanting something to eat.
“We had little skillets set up on the side and we’d cook some food every day for the employees at the strip mall. After a while, we figured, ‘Why not just open a restaurant.’”
And that’s exactly what they did. Now Burt’s Butcher shop is a booming business with a butcher shop on one end of the building, providing fresh cuts every day, and a restaurant on the other side of the building providing good food and great prices.
As of June 1, 2000 the restaurant will have been in business for four years.
“Everything that’s cooked in the restaurant, I cook it.” declares Brandon. “I run the place and do all the cooking.”
But Brandon didn’t start out in charge. Brandon recalls, “I started out washing dishes, taking out trash and all that stuff. Eventually they had me cut some things.”
Now Brandon is the man in charge and is usually at the restaurant from open to close.
When asked if anyone could beat their steaks, Brandon just leaned back in his chair and laughed. That’s all he needed to say.
However, he did add, “We’re known for our steaks. You can’t beat ‘em.”
Burt’s Butcher Shop is open Tuesday through Saturday and their closed Sunday and Monday. The Butcher shop hours are 9:00am – 7:00pm and their restaurant hours are 11:00am – 8:00pm.
According to Brandon, Burt’s also does catering. There is a $300 minimum for catering and that is usually attained with a thirty person party. They do all the cooking on-sight at the event. They have already catered for sorority functions and various meetings in Columbus.
Brandon says that the best value at Burt’s Butcher shop is the Tuesday Special – T-bone steak and one side for $4.99.
Most of the orders at Burt’s are budget-friendly. Many of the specials and sandwiches cost only four or five dollars. And there’s a special every day of the week except Friday.
Here’s a run down of Burt’s specials:
Every day - Schnitzel Dinner with one side for $5.99
Tuesday - T-bone with one side for $4.99
Wednesday - Beef tips with rice with one side, $5.99
Thursday - 12oz. Sirloin with two sides for $5.99
Friday - No special
Saturday - BBQ Plate with two sides for $4.99
